I know someone who is interested in starting WoW, but isn't sure what class to play (no, it's not me).
I think he's looking for a class with a relatively easy learning curve, but with good potential for buttkicking at the higher levels.
He is currently considering a paladin, but is open to suggestions, so I told him I'd check with my friends in the know.
Any pointers for a total noob?

paladins are very easy to level, very powerful at lower levels, but people tend to get bored with them at 60... although the paladin changes are pretty nice
we have a few in our guild who are monsters at PvP
Druids are fun but tough to level, and unless your friend wants to be a heal/buff bot I wouldn't suggest it... me, I like that role :p
Priests are main healers, but when specced shadow can do some incredible damage at end level. They are a bit tougher to level than most, but are very feared in PvP.
Rogues are easy mode all the way around. However, if your friend isn't someone who enjoys crying about everything all day long, he/she probably wouldn't fit into the rogue community very well.
Warriors are main tanks. Fun if you like that kind of thing. Not as easy to level as pallys though that's for sure.
Warlocks are fun leveling up but a lot don't like them in end game. They do have some nifty abilities though and a pet to abuse.
Hunters are pretty easy to level as well, and are fun to play end game, especually if you like to gank. Train up a powerful pet and you hardly have to do anything but stand there and shoot.
Mages are a blast, but are like glass cannons. They make their own food and water and for me at least, that makes them very easy to level as well. My 38 mage can take out lev 43 mobs if I'm careful about damage taken.
I don't know much about shamans (my highest is level 12) but they seem pretty easy to level up. They have a lot of spells and various ways to be powerful, including a self rez, and a speed form at level 20.
I don't have all the stats and things that Jeff could spew out, but that's my opinion on the classes.

Lilae pretty much hit the nail on the head for the most part.
Warriors, however, are difficult to level until around lv 35, then you get a whirlwind axe. The thing about warriors is they're hard to play effectively unless you have a badass weapon. If you do have the weapon, they are killing machines until they outlevel that weapon.
Druids and Warlocks are a pain in the ass to level but are great at lv 60, probably the most powerful classes in the game if played right. Pallies and shamans are easy to level but boring at 60 (in pve at least).
A good easy, fun, strong class would be mage.
Rogues and hunters are op'd.

I have experience as a solo warrior, hunter and priest.
Hunter by far, is the easiest solo class I have ever played in any game outside of Morrowind/Oblivion. There is really no way to gimp up a hunter.
Before I left, I could solo 58+ elites in Dire Maul if I had some kiting room.

Actually I think I'm gonna say that a warlock is the strongest soloing class in the game. My roommate solos every single elemental trash mob in DM west for farming. This includes the 4 mob tree packs, the big trees, the arcane guys around the pylons, and the arcane tornadoes with the 3 little adds. He solos silithus templars (60 elites) like they're nothing. Basically if it can be feared, it dies.

But a hunter is alot easier to learn then a warlock. You want an easy class to learn on then work your way up the difficulty ladder.Rhylith wrote:Actually I think I'm gonna say that a warlock is the strongest soloing class in the game.
