well...sorta.
a day in the life of farf:
i wake up, every day at 6 in the morning during tax season. i don't have to be at work until 9. i spend the first hour waking up, practically eating coffee beans, etc.
the next hour, i play some sort of video game...like currently i'm enthralled in final fantasy 8. then, i spend the next hour getting ready for work (taking a shower, getting files and what not ready, etc.). then it's off to work.
i arrive at my office about 10-20 minutes early depending on how fast i drive. i fire up the server and various other machines, and make sure everything starts smoothly (we usually have about 3 updates a day for the first four weeks). it's almost as fun as pulling teeth without novacaine....almost.
i'm the ONLY computer literate person in my office. it's not so bad, but at times it can make life miserable. when i'm neck deep in clients, the last thing i want to do is go running to the server to delete some bad .dll file that got downloaded (this happens about 12 times a month, we have to delete the file, then shut every system down and restart).
currently, i'm just a tax preparer, it is my second year. this is my grand father's office, he owns 2 of them. he's training me to be the office manager of his other one. his contract has a minimum requirement of 3 years experience for office manager. i average a 96% satisfactory rating, 92% turnover rate (means percentage of clients getting refunds) and a 30 minute preparation time.
i'm not particularly a fan of taxes, but it's something i'm fairly decent at, plus the amount an office manager makes for 5 months of work isn't too shabby. last year, this office pulled in 80k, the other pulled in over 100k. the office manager gets a percentage of that.
usually 20-30%, hen you find something else to do for 7 months.
tax season is only rough for the first month....it's usually about 40+ people a day for 2 weeks, then it mellows off to 30+ for 2 weeks, after that it's usually 10-20 a day...then comes march and april. last year, on our busiest day, we had 64 clients. we started at 8:45 that day, i left here at 11 p.m.
we finished the last client at around 9 p.m. but there's other things you have to do before shutting down the office, such as filing all the neccessary paperwork (the paperwork reduction act of 2000 only created more paperwork
). usually you would do that as you go, but sometimes you get so backed up that you have to do damn near everything except the actual filing of taxes before you close...it can be INCREDIBLY stressfull. i'm a mellow person by nature, so it really doesn't bother me that much..
march and april are when the big ones come. the 7 hour forms, we like to call em. usually consists of farmers, self employed, and / or people who have high income with 10 thousand deductions... complicated.
we officially shut down on april 15th, 6pm....but i have to keep coming up here until may 15th, the louisiana state tax deadline. after that, my tax year is pseudo done...i roll up here ever thursday from 9 - 12 am, check the answering machine, and solve various problems people might have throughout the year. the thing you see the most of is problems with dependents. the irs HATES it when 2 different parties claim the same person....and i'm not a fan of it myself.
that's about it for the day in the life of a tax year with farf, and the long of the short of it is, nope, it's not my baby yet...but it will be in one year
if i still want this piece of crap.
when this got offered to me, i thought one thing...2 things certain in life, death and taxes. i don't own a funeral home, but some days, i really really really...really wish i did.

Actually, you can make some pretty good money running one of those offices; especially if you own it.
I used to have some H&R Block offices as part-time customers...they would buy the cheapest crap possible, then every year spend a small fortune for me to come out and get it going again
Finally, tho, H&R dictated a network standard for them to follow and I lost my gravy train.
Was making several thousand each year on a part time job - that was nice.

that network....the castanet marimba tuner and the vpn client
i'm convinced that satan divised this system.
today, i'm having to force connect and possibly reinstall my entire office setup. they changed the update system from last year to cause less complication but now, i'm having to do everything manually, which is really bad considering the entire system is supposed to be automatic.
