I just wanted to send holiday greetings to everyone and let you know about the recent changes to the Volsung Tribe boards.
My previous web host was way behind in their updates, and I was looking to move my small cadre of websites elsewhere. These boards where on such an old version of phpBB that it was challenging to get it all moved over to the current version; however, it is now complete! We are running on current software and a faster server.
I decided to drop the front end of the website, and make http://www.volsungtribe.com map to the forums directly. I know we rarely use this site anymore, but I wanted to at least preserve it for those few times one of us drops in and says 'Howdy!'. Also, during the upgrades, we lost the custom visuals of the site. I will try to get those added in some semblance over the holidays.
Anyways, I hope you are all doing well and enjoying work, family, games & life in general!! Have a great holiday and don't forget to logon for the double-XP weekends around Christmas!

Currently, there is no benefit for these folks to register unwantedly. Their name never shows on the member list. They cannot post. I figure it is just some old bot program that seeks out phpbbs boards and signs up.
Anyways, I will be working on a few more upgrades to the system. When I do that, I will have to freeze the boards closed for short periods. So, if you see it all locked down.. that is why. Just check back the next day, and all should be good.

BTW, I'm thinking that those signups were probably board spiders, which systematically search for PHPBB board sites, and then create new users and manufacture weblinks back to their commerce sites. Since they did not post, I assume their only value is that they show up with a link to their website, which may help their search listings and other advertising....
Mostly harmless....
However, I still have not deleted ALL of them.. as the only tool I have to delete users, requires 4 steps and 20 odd clicks per name. Very cumbersome and time consuming.....
I'll get to them all soon....

As near as I can tell, the flux of new user registrations with sexual related names, and links to porn blog sites did not indicate any compromise of the website security itself. We were not hacked.
Rather, the open registration that we have been enjoying allowed ANYONE to register & then post immediately. Even though I did not see any posts from these new porn spammer usernames (Perhaps the moderators already deleted them??), I locked down the registration process. Until I have a chance to evaluate this further, only the Ramblings forum will be open.
New Procedure:
Registering for a new account will send the board admin (me) and email, and they cannot log-in until I approve them.
If they are not logged-in, they cannot post anywhere. They can only read. I left the read permission 'public' so that friendly guilds can keep up with any of our events, or other interesting news.

I will be putting the board into a series of lock-downs until this is resolved.
We will most likely have to go to a more aggressive security stance on the board. i.e. new registrants will have to be manually approved prior to posting.... <sigh>.. the griefers get us again...

The graphics are incredible, the game-play is awesome, and it's freaking outerspace done right. It also seems very much to be an MMPORG done right.
