in the beginning, there was osbourne and there was sabbath, and it was good.
and so from the osbourne, and the sabbath, and others...not too much indifferent from the zepplin, there came much prosperity and good fortune.
the gods had smiled upon us and gave us ROCK!
(que badass guitar riff here)
more specifically, they gave us metal.
from the tribes of zepplin, and osbourne sprang others over the years.
they delivered unto us, one known as slayer*, and the magestic pantera*, and times with these were good.
and as all good things, evil must also be borne entwined.
a new wave sprang up, that at one time consumed the populace, it was....the great serpet, NEW WAVE
(que cheezy devo here)
more specifically, the 1980's.
the time for the old gods had passed.
now, the heritage began to fade, as the music began to reinvent itself into something else...hair music
the era gave us unforgettable names for their awesomenessity....the guns n roses, the megadeth, the metallica.
however it was also a very dark time, as it also spawned
THE WINGER
(que she's only 17 here)
as the 80's came to a close, the music was much a stagnant beast - enter, alternative rock.
more specifically, cobain.
the modern day moses.
the one known as cobain and his tribe "nirvana" lead thousands of angst filled teens and young adults into the bleak spiral that became known as...generation x.
and after the passing of the cobain tribesman, the music stopped.
enter the world of hip hop.
all was dark in the world and there was no light.
gangsta rap had swarmed the earth with it's catchy hooks, "booty shaking beats", and....slap a ho lyrics.
while some marveled in it's "majesty"
others crept quietly into the night, forever holding onto their dreams of the pantera, the slayer, and to a lesser extent, the alice in chains.
enter the year 1998.
almost phantom like, a new movement was started in the world...
it called itself, nu metal
or neo metal, or new metal....or just plain old metal.
it started with the marilyn manson* and others of a harder nature, like the corrosion of comformity, the biohazard, the type o negative, the fear factory and the rob zombie.
it came like a swift kick in the jimmy.
and from it sprang a monster that many grew to know and love
this monster was the 9 headed beast known as slipknot.
but the slipknot was not alone, there were many at first.
the slipknot, dope, the static x, the staind, the system of a down, the mudvayne, and the disturbed.
and from them, came others...
but along the way, many were renounced...such as the marilyn manson, for being too theatrical, or an alice cooper wanna be, or just plain old sell out.
or they were just plain forgotten.
but of all the new metal...one, had achieved a mainstream success that defied even it's staunchest critics.
it was disturbed.
the purests will tell you that they aren't in the same league as the old gods. and they would be right, as there will never be another pantera, or osbourne.
but for their time, they are the biggest thing going in metal, and a breath of fresh air for those who welcome the new, and still accept the old for all of it's glory.
and that is the abridged gospel of metal from the beginning to end.
*Pantera should be considered in their own league, called panterism, as they are without a doubt, the hardest band EVER. (if you love metal that is
)
and ergo, timeless in my opinion.
*in his early days, marilyn manson was actually not as alternagay as he was later in life and didn't rely on as much shock value...i actually enjoy portrait of an american family more than almost any of his later work.....
but he still sold out
*in regards to slayer...hey, slayer has the most loyal fans of any band out there. now that's frickin musical power.
THAT IS ALL!
