I just deleted three posts by spammers. One about patents, one made no sense, and one about car insurance, all by different people.

:(

Heya,

Thanks for the heads-up. I had mistakenly taken user registration so far offline, that anyone could post. :(

My bad. I have the boards back on regestration via Admin approval only, and I will only do that if I see a reasonable post to the Application forum.

:)

By the way, I picked up Battlefield 2142 and have been really enjoying it!!! Really good support for combat roles, squad based & commander based gameplay. The new toys in 2142 are fun as well!

SPAMMERS MUST DIE!

Post by Urgon »

Hey all,

Just a brief update about the volume of spammers who are registering on this board. Because of the previous increases in registration process security, they were only be stopped from posting... which was pretty good.

However, I was receiving about a dozen emails per day, from the application parser. These were all spammers. My Inbox (nay, my delete bin) has been inundated for months with this blight. Making it very unlikely, that should an actual new member try to apply, they would most likely be lost in the spam. LITERALLY!

So, I finally found some help and made a few discrete changes ($*#$@! that, I hacked the board. There. I said it... and I'm proud.) which should hopefully reduce the number of new registrants that are not legit.

Apparently, they were registering just to raise the legitimacy scores for their websites. I cannot go into further details, as I do not want to tip our hand, but those of you who keep up on these things know of which I speak.

So, once I monitor these changes for a week.. and hopefully have no more spam registrations... I'll start to delete out the 200+ users from the board database. (whew, may have to write a script to do that or something...)

So finally, if you see any odd board behaviour, if it is not deliterious to our use of the board, please just ignore it. It is probably just because I cut hard & deep. And if you find any true errors/bugs, email them to me please. Do not post them.

Many thanks all!
