Great Beer!

Post by Urgon »

Come'on all, there are some mighty fine beers out there nowadays, and nobody is sharing what they are finding! Post some of your favorite current beers, local, craft, micro or macro brewing ... anything goes!

And especially talk about your local beers that we cannot get where we live, so it inspires to come out and visit ya'all!

:)

Oh, and the poll.... why not a poll! What's your favorite beer style today?

~Urgon
p.s. By the way, I homebrew.. if i had not mentioned that before. I got a 5 gallon batch in the fermenter as we speak. :) A pale ale with moderate hops.

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine Ale - 25th Expedition

Post by Urgon »

Ok, my current fave. Sierra Nevada is a very large microbrewery out of Chico, California here in the US. They make a damn fine many brews, like thier Pale Ale, Porter & Stout. However, this year's "Bigfoot Barleywine" is truly magnificent! http://www.sierranevada.com/beers/bigfoot.html

With a heavy maltiness, and bittersweet hop character, it lies somewhere between a scotch ale and an IPA... and has plenty of kick at 9.6% ABV. Serve chilled with your favorite steak or grilled meat. :)

Wow..........too many selections to choose from.......can I just say I love beer in general.....I have to say though my fav is the Black Velvet...gotta love the Guiness and Strongbow.....but an interesting combo is Lindeman's Lambic Framboise mixed with Youngs Double chocolate Stout....its like rasberry chocolaty goodness.....but I like the Belgian Ale Urthel....it was good....but a lot of "floaters" in the bottle.............

OH OH OH
and the first beer I had after Aidan was born Ephemere...made by Unibroue.......actually just about any of the beers by Unibroue

Wow that sounds good! I would not have thought of that combo, but it will have to be tried on my next visit to the multi-tap pub!

And I too love any of the Unibroue beers! Especially "La fin du monde" and 'Tres pistoles'http://www.unibroue.com/our_beers_eng.html

p.s. enjoying a Long Hammer IPA from Red Hook right now! Seemed suitable for a Troll Thane!

Belgian White Ale is also currently my favorite style of beer. Blue Moon brews an awesome one, and there's another tasty belgian white called Hoegaarden. However, I would caution you away from Woody Creek, which is not quite as tasty as the other two brands.

I like good beers, but I usually drink one with a snack or meal and I don't really want any more. Because of this my experience is pretty limited. In other words, keep the suggestions coming so I can find some beers I like and not seem like such a wuss to my friends :P

Jeff, you probably would prefer pilsners since you haven't had a lot of experience with more robust brews. Something light colored would usually look good for you, but it's not always. For instance, Harp is very light looking but tastes very strong.

I would recommend a Pale Ale to get you accustomed to tastier drinks. I'm having a brain fart atm or I would suggest several. Oh! Sierra Nevada, like Urgon mentioned, is a great beer. Belgian White ales are also light and fruity.

If you prefer something a bit stronger in flavor, I would personally suggest Newcastle or Amstel Light even. Newcastle is especially delicious when layered on top of cider in a giant mug. :P

If you decide you like the stouter ales, go for a good Oatmeal Stout like Sam Smith. Dead Guy Ale is very stout and a bit sweet, but more of a dessert beer, as is Mackeson's XXX.

Just let me know if you have more questions :D

Last beer I had was a pretty good amber ale called Anchor Steam when I went to a late night showing of Goldfinger, MST3K style in Austin last weekend. I have no idea how it stands up to other ones though. I've liked most of the darker beers I've had so far (though it's not very many), and also the wheat beers.

I'll look into some of the ones you recommended.

more BEER!

Post by Urgon »

Anchor Steam is another delicious beer! They have a special brew called 'Liberty Ale' which is real nice!

Lil, loved the thought of newcastle & cider! Yummmmmm!!!! I'll give that a go too!

For the Aussies, have you ever heard of or tired "Sheaf Stout' ?? We used to get it up here back in the 90's ... but I haven't seen it around in a long time. It is perhaps the... em.... Earthiest... stout I've ever had. Very unique and (to me ) Tasty!

Bottom's up!

Somethin in the 5th/6th street bar district probably. That place is crazy. I have never seen that many bars/bands/people in such a small area.
